Mt Young Hike

Lupita and Maximus

We thought the hike to Mt Young was a great adventure. It was different from Colorado in many ways. One was that the environment was much more moist. That caused a lot more vegetation, including ferns, madrone trees, and mosses. At the top of the hike it was different than some hikes in Colorado because the view had the ocean, other islands, less buildings, and boats. The animals were different because there were many slugs because it rained a lot this year. An interesting fact about Mt. Young and Sand Juan is that glaciers 18000 years ago carved out channels and scratched the top of Mt. Young. They also dropped off boulders in random places as they began to melt.
We also found a purple starfish by the ocean as we were eating lunch by a lighthouse at Limekiln. Along with that we saw a pair of seals swimming by and mussel colonies. A sad fact is Maximus Miles killed a slug today, the most depressing moment in his live. As he was walking down the trail while he was distracted by the beautiful view , not looking down as he slip on the slipper slug. Poor, poor slug. Other an this the hike was amazing.
